Pay Order

This pay order was issued to Sarah Carter in August 1780 for her deceased husband, Private Daniel Carter of the 7th Connecticut Regiment. Private Carter died at Valley Forge. The pay order certifies Sarah as his administrator. It is a stark reminder of what awaited the wives of the men who did not survive the harsh winter conditions at Valley Forge.
